We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.

Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains.
Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep.
Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Suitable place for relaxation and hot springs, The accessibility is not so convenient unless you travel by car. The hot-spring-village is just lovely small so it’s better to combine with other nearby sightseeing places.
The hotel has a long history and while old, it has been maintained fairly well. The room was comfortable, I was able to enjoy the hot spring at my leisure and the staff were very accommodating. They play background music in the hallway but it was loud enough to hear in my room when I wanted to sleep. When I asked if they could turn it off, they did, without any problems. It was a very comfortable, quiet night’s sleep. Dinner and breakfast were also included in our reservation and I found it to be quite substantial.
Perfect place to enjoy Unzen. Staffs are VERY kind and friendly. They really welcomed us truthfully. Room was SO big and SUPER CLEAN and the bedding were really comfy so I slept well everyday. Nice view from the room. You can see the whole lake from the balcony. You can have some cup nuddles and coffee anytime in the public lounge which is open 24hr. Some tablewares, microwaves and hot water are also provided for free in the lounge which is very useful. Strongly recommend this place to you.
This is such a wonderful place to stay. The whole place is spotlessly clean, the rooms are comfortable, the location is very good (5 mins into the centre of Unzen). The real highlight is the ladies running the place who are just delightful, so bright and kind and great - and the food! The breakfast is the best I’ve had for ages, and the dinner is even better! Would highly recommend staying here.
The location was great since it was within walking distance to Unzen Jigoku and many other tourist attractions. The food buffet selections were very diverse and I appreciated the modifications to make it safer and to prevent the spread of Covid. I enjoyed the arcade area with ping pong tables and karaoke. I also enjoyed the rooftop onsen and I thought the bath temperature was perfect.
This is one of our favorite place so far in Japan. The suite is very big with 2 rooms. Very quiet and zen. The common kitchen is small but friendly. There is a small grocerie store 5 mins away that sells everything you need to cook or ready to eat meals. We enjoyed the one day hike from the hotel, the public onsen and the walk through the park. We wish, we could have stayed longer.
They’re spot on with all the things that you’d want from a highly reputable hotel.
The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality.
For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen.
I certainly would recommend to others.
Room was spacious and comfortable, with own private onsen. They offered different patterned yukata for us to choose! We ordered dinner and breakfast and they offered the best meals we had to-date fr hotel/ ryokan. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. Free coffee / tea at lobby were a bonus.
It's a very relaxing place in a beautiful area for a good price. The hot springs in the hotel room with the sea view was as amazing as it looks in the photos! Some of the reviews said that the staff didn't speak English very well, but we don't know any Japanese and had no trouble communicating.
The location is 2 seconds away from the main bus stop, to the hiking spots and the main unzen viewpoints of hot spring hells. The hostel itself is lovely and warm, the accomodation is comfortable. The best part is the host, so nice and helpful. Thank you Ichi!
The view from my room was great. I could see the sunset lake. The room was clean, and the facility was new. The hotel’s location is center of the unzen onsen district, which is convenient. The price is very reasonable, and I would pay more.
The room included drinks at the rooftop and at the bar lounge. Also, the room was big and the bath was amazing. The hotel was right in front of the Unzen hot springs so we could walk around and look at where the martyrs were killed.
We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.
While not the most elegant hotel in Unzen, it was a good balance of price with services and ambience. The dinners and breakfasts were amazing and a highlight of our stay in Japan so far.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Both at front desk and restaurant. Beautiful view and environment. Hotel has transport to send us out to bus stop on our departure.
