A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Chester is a beautiful and ancient city where Roman Legionaires, Viking raiders, and Norman invaders once walked. We especially enjoyed the Roman Amphitheatre ruins and the 1000 year old Cathedral. It is worth the trip.

THE LEOPARD NO HOT DRINKS EITHER STAFF BIT MISERABLE THERE TOO BUT REASONABLE PRICES. MOST PLACES NOT CHEAP BUT FOOD SEEMED GREAT EVERYWHERE THAT SERVED IT. THE ARCHITECT A GOOD WELL ORGANISED PUB, GREAT QUIZ IN PIED BULL ON THURSDAY EVENING. 2 WETHERSPOONS TO GO TO IF NEED BASIC FOOD ONLY TRIED ONE - YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WILL GET THERE OF COURSE AND IT WAS TASTY. Chester is a great town for wandering, the City walls walk was a great introduction to the town and it is worth doing this soon after you arrive to get a good perspective of the town. The Grosvenor Museum was an unexpected gem and ideal for a wet morning

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings. The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful. There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.

I recommend going to the Orthodox church to celebrate the Greek Easter this year it was brilliant, each year it seems to get better and better. I also recommend staying at the MacDonalds New Blossom hotel which is centrally appointed and easy to get to the church via the No:16 bus the hotel has good facilities and does a variety of full English cooked breakfasts it also has good Wi-Fi in each room and good bathing facilities. At an reasonable price. If you still have time board the tour bus and also go for a river trip as well as an good place for shopping and restaurants.

Thankfully, this doesn't extend to the reception/hospitality staff who were unfailingly polite and helpful. The hotel is located on the canal and is roughly five minutes walk to Chester railway station and the city centre. The terrace at the back of the hotel overlooks the canal and is great for people watching and toasting the end of the day with a sundowner or two.
